The Voice of the Lord

This psalm is all about God’s splendor and might.

Read Psalms 29.

Where the reading from yesterday was about tenderness and compassion, this psalm is all about God’s splendor and might. It is a call not only to all creatures of the earth, but even to the heavenly host. God as Creator of the Universe has the voice of thunder, toppling trees and igniting flames.

While it may sound that the psalmist is celebrating God’s power of destruction, the final verses stand in contrast. I wonder if what is being said is this: “The Lord has the power to do all these amazing things, but what God mostly does is give God’s people strength and peace.

If you can, spend a few moments outdoors and give a big shout of praise (or maybe a quiet one if your neighbors are within earshot!) for the wonder and majesty of what God has created. And then say another thank you for small measures of strength and peace.
