Scripture as Encouragement

Paul reminds his readers to use the utmost patience when using scripture to “convince, rebuke, or encourage.”

Read 2 Timothy 3:14-4:5.

Here, we read that scripture is “useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (vs. 16). How easy it is, though, to use scripture to prove our point or to shore up our position on any number of issues! Yet, Paul reminds his readers to use the utmost patience when using scripture to “convince, rebuke, or encourage.”

In what ways have you used scripture in conversations with others—fellow believers, seekers, or those who actively oppose Christian teaching and practice? Have you used the bible as a weapon or an instrument of peace?

In prayer, commit yourself to using scripture only in ways that are invitational, respectful, and of genuine concern for the person with whom you are speaking.
