Here, we hear God introducing a servant leader who is inspired by the spirit of God to bring justice for all. And this justice will not come through shouting or force. Instead, the light of God’s love for the world will shine through this leader, bringing healing, freedom, and new life. They will be gentle and tenderhearted with the bruised and the broken. Of course, we who follow Jesus cannot help but consider Jesus as the fulfilment of this prophecy. In fact, we hear echoes of this prophecy at Jesus’ baptism. And what is described here is exactly the type of leadership Jesus embodied.
Are there any parts of yourself that need healing? Where, in your life, are you bruised or dimly burning? Imagine bringing these out into the light and allowing God to take you by the hand and keep you. What emotions does this image evoke?
Offer a promise of thanksgiving for God’s promise-keeping and for Jesus’ deep compassion.
