Softness of Heart

Humility, compassion, and mercy are the signposts of God’s kingdom, rather than pride and rigidity.

Matthew 1:18-25.

In this passage, we read that Joseph was a righteous man, but righteous, for a Jewish man in that time, meant keeping the Law. Righteous, according to the Law, meant publicly shaming and humiliating an unwed, pregnant Mary rather than quietly dismissing her. This is an early indication that Jesus would transform the understanding of righteousness. Humility, compassion, and mercy are the signposts of God’s kingdom, rather than pride and rigidity.

In prayer, ask God where or to whom you are being called to soften your heart.
